PDF bank statement converter
Most converters ask you to upload your statement to their server. Tallyrow does the reading on your computer instead, so the file stays with you.
Text PDFs and scanned PDFs
There are two kinds of statement PDF. A text PDF, from online banking, stores the characters themselves. A scanned PDF stores a picture of paper. Tallyrow reads the first kind. To tell which you have, open the file and try to select a line of text: if it highlights, it is text. Scans need optical character recognition (OCR), which Tallyrow does not offer yet. If you hit one, the tool says so and lets you leave your email for when it does.
Layouts it detects
- Separate Debit and Credit columns, under headings such as Withdrawals and Deposits, or Paid out and Paid in.
- A single Amount column with minus signs, brackets, or CR and DR suffixes.
- A Balance column, used to check every row.
- Dates written 06/01/2026, 2026-06-01, 01 Jun 2026 or Jun 1.
- Descriptions that wrap onto a second line.
- Headings printed on the first page only; later pages use the same columns.
Where it can fail
- Statements that put amounts and dates on different lines.
- Multi-column designs that interleave two accounts side by side.
- Scanned pages and password-protected files.
When it cannot find transactions it says so rather than guessing. The feedback form is the fastest way to tell us about a layout that fails.
Why in-browser matters for statements
A statement shows your balance, your employer, your landlord and every shop you visit. A tool that never receives the file cannot leak it, keep it, or be asked for it. How Tallyrow works lists what the site does collect (anonymous usage counts) and how to verify the rest.
Cost
The preview and one full export a day are free. Beyond that, pages are sold once: 200 for $9.99 or 1,000 for $24.99. No subscription. See pricing.
Questions
Which PDFs work?
Text-based PDFs: the kind you download from online banking, where you can select and copy the text. Open the file in a PDF viewer and try to highlight a transaction. If you can, Tallyrow can usually read it. Scanned or photographed statements are not supported yet.
Does it work with my bank?
Tallyrow does not use bank-specific templates. It looks for a table with a date, a description and amount columns (debit and credit, or one signed amount) and an optional balance. Many layouts work; some do not. The preview shows what was found so you can judge before you download anything.
Can it open password-protected PDFs?
Not yet. Remove the password in your PDF viewer, save a copy, and convert that copy.
