Bank statement to CSV

CSV is the plain format that spreadsheets, databases, scripts and many accounting tools can read. Tallyrow writes one row per transaction.

Amounts use a dot as the decimal separator and no thousands separator, so they import cleanly. The file is UTF-8 with a byte order mark so Excel opens accented characters correctly. Fields containing commas or quotes are quoted.

Importing into other tools

Most accounting and budgeting tools ask you to map columns when you import a CSV. Map Date, Description, Debit, Credit and Balance to their equivalents. Some tools want a single signed Amount column instead; in a spreadsheet, subtract Debit from Credit to make one. Tallyrow does not target any one tool’s import format, so check the import screen of the tool you use.

A note on safety

Statement text is untrusted input. If a description starts with =, +, - or @, Tallyrow prefixes it with an apostrophe so a spreadsheet will not run it as a formula.

Prefer a workbook?

The same data is available as an Excel file with numeric cells and a frozen header. Both downloads count as one export.

Questions

Is my bank statement uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is opened and read by code running in your browser tab. It is not sent to Tallyrow or anyone else. The page can only talk to its own server (enforced by a content security policy), and that server only receives anonymous usage events, never file content. You can check this in your browser’s Network tab, or switch Wi-Fi off after the page loads and convert anyway.

What do I get in the Excel or CSV file?

One row per transaction with Date, Description, Debit, Credit and Balance. Amounts are real numbers, not text, so sums and filters work. Dates are kept exactly as printed on the statement, because day-month order cannot be guessed safely.

What about European number formats?

Amounts like 1.234,56 and 1,234.56 are both recognised, as are minus signs, brackets and CR or DR suffixes.
